Casting Call - Deaf and Hearing Actors with BSL

Read Now

I'm working with Bim Ajadi on an exciting new project for LSPTV at the moment.

We're currently looking for actors for a production which is to be filmed on 25th and 26th February 2015 in Bromley.... various roles available. We're particularly looking for Deaf Actors and Hearing Actors with BSL....

We are making an online film to help Deaf children to understand how to behave if someone asks to see their body under their underwear, for a well known national children's charity.  We want to cast:

Mum 1: Mum of Deaf Boy 1. Mum can be Deaf or Hearing, but with good BSL communication skills. The Boy is aged 11, so the Mum could be from 30 - 50. Ethnicity - we are open-minded about ethnicity, and we are aiming to achieving a diverse cast, with Mum and Son of same ethnicity. Friendly-faced and warm character.

Deaf Boy 1: Deaf Boy 1 loves drawing, and is happy and relaxed in his Mum's company. Intelligent and sweet. Playing age of 11, but we would prefer to cast an older boy who can play a younger age because of the sensitive nature of the content. Ethnicity - we are open-minded about ethnicity, and we are aiming to achieve a diverse cast, with Mum and Son of same ethnicity. The actor's parent will be paid to chaperone on the filming day.

Dad 2: Dad of Deaf Girl 2. Dad can be Deaf or Hearing, but with good BSL communication skills. The Girl is aged 8, so the Dad could be from 30 - 50. Ethnicity - we are open-minded about ethnicity, and we are aiming to achieve a diverse cast, with Dad and Daughter of same ethnicity. Friendly-faced and warm character.

Deaf Girl 2: Deaf Girl 2 loves her toys, especially her doll, and is happy and relaxed in her Dad's company. Intelligent and sweet. Playing age of 8, but we would prefer to cast an older girl who can play a younger age because of the sensitive nature of the content. Ethnicity - we are open-minded about ethnicity, and we are aiming to achieve a diverse cast, with Dad and Daughter of same ethnicity. The actor's parent will be paid to chaperone on the filming day.

Dodgy Youth Worker: The Male Youth Worker (aged 25 - 40) approaches the young Deaf Girl 2 and asks her an inappropriate question - trying to get her to show him what's under her underwear. She responds as she has been taught and the situation ends with her walking away and her Dad arriving. The Youth Worker can be Deaf or Hearing, but with good BSL communication skills. He shouldn't look scary or out of the ordinary. Ethnicity - we are open-minded about ethnicity, and we are aiming to achieve a diverse cast.

Hearing Teenage Neighbour: With a playing age of 18/19, the older Hearing Teenage Neighbour tries to take an inappropriate photo of Deaf Boy 1 to share on social media. She should appear a bit of a ladette, think this is funny, when clearly it's not an appropriate thing to ask. She is hearing, but has good facial expressions and gestures, so it is really obvious what she is asking. Ethnicity - we are open-minded about ethnicity, and we are aiming to achieve a diverse cast.

To be considered: please email karen.gilchrist@lsptv.com with details of previous acting and availability.

Deadline: 20th January, but please apply as soon as possible as we may reach decisions before this time.

Fees: all inclusive £250 for adult roles (one day's filming), and £100 for children (plus £100 for chaperone). Please note that this includes travel expenses to Bromley.
